Fort Cigogne, beauties and gestures | Exposure

Built on the Glénan archipelago in the middle of the 18th century, Fort Cigogne was in turn a military fort to counter privateers, an oceanographic observation laboratory, a German garrison during the Second World War, seasonal accommodation for fishermen and accommodation summer for trainees at the Glénans sailing school.

In 2019, restoration and redevelopment work on Fort Cigogne was launched under the leadership of the municipality of Fouesnant. Objectives: to care for a heritage tired by the centuries and abused by the elements to restore it to the place it deserves in the heart of the archipelago and the national nature reserve of Saint-Nicolas des Glénan. It is this somewhat crazy bet that photographer Emmanuel Delandre followed for three years with a view to producing a book, to be published in December 2024.

On the occasion of the end of the construction site and the upcoming opening to the public of the rehabilitated fort, the Archipelago presents some of its photographs which focus on the challenges of an extraordinary construction site, the precise and precious gestures of those who led it, the materials – as robust as fragile – that they worked and the very particular lights in which throne
Fort Cigogne.
