Protected natural areas a natural heritage to preserve

Nestling in the heart of the Breton Riviera, the commune of Fouesnant-les Glénan is home to a number of protected natural areas.

These are real environmental gems to be discovered all year round. With its well-preserved coastline, remarkable wetlands and unique island heritage, Fouesnant is actively committed to preserving biodiversity and promoting its environment. These sites, managed in partnership with local players and organisations with the necessary expertise, offer visitors an exceptional setting in which to reconnect with nature. Find out more about Fouesnant’s main protected natural areas below, to be explored with respect for their ecological wealth.

Mousterlin The Mousterlin polder

Created in the 20th century to increase agricultural land, the Mousterlin polder is now a protected natural area, managed to preserve wetland ecosystems. The marshes, wet meadows and canals provide a prime habitat for aquatic species and birds. A wooden footbridge provides an immersive introduction to this natural environment, without disturbing it.

Mousterlin The White Sea lagoon

Located between Mousterlin and Bénodet, the Mer Blanche is a protected lagoon separated from the ocean by a dune belt. Listed as a Natura 2000 area, it is home to some exceptional flora and fauna, including migratory birds, halophilic plants and amphibians. This fragile site is ideal for birdwatching and walking or cycling along the well-maintained footpaths.

Glénan The Glénan archipelago

Around fifteen kilometres off the coast of Fouesnant, the Glénan archipelago is an emblematic Natura 2000 site. These paradise-like islands with their tropical appearance are home to rare species such as the Narcisse des Glénan, a plant endemic to the archipelago. Water sports are regulated to protect the seabed and nesting birds. Accessible by boat from the port of Beg-Meil, the archipelago is a must for nature lovers.

Mousterlin The Mousterlin dunes

Fouesnant’s dunes, particularly those at Mousterlin, are a rare and fragile coastal landscape. They play an essential role in protecting the coast from erosion. These sandy environments are home to a discreet but essential biodiversity. Signposted footpaths allow you to discover this fragile heritage while limiting trampling of sensitive areas. An ideal way to combine relaxation with environmental awareness.

Preserve to pass on

These accessible and protected natural areas are open to the public subject to certain access conditions, and preserving them is a priority. Light facilities (signposted paths, information panels) make it easier to discover the sites while respecting their ecological balance. By choosing to explore these sites, you are taking part in a responsible and sustainable tourism approach. It is essential to stay on the paths, not to pick plants, to preserve the fauna and to keep dogs on a lead.
