The Ile de Groix is 8km long and 3km wide. The ferry from Lorient sails past the different harbours of the Lorient Approaches (passengers, commercial, fishing, marina, military) and the historic citadel at Port-Louis before heading out to sea. Belle Ile en Mer is the largest of the Breton islands (9km wide and 20km long). It is a 45 minute cruise to the capital Le Palais, sheltered behind its citadel built by Vauban, or to the charming, flower-filled harbour of Sauzon. Belle-Ile truly lives up to its name; its colourful little valleys, dunes and tiny coves provided inspiration for Alexandre Dumas, Monet, Sarah Bernhardt and many others. Houat is 14km off the coast of Quiberon and 8km from its sister island of Hoëdic. It is a tranquil, traffic-free island and the fishing village of Port-Saint-Gildas is a great starting point for a walk past white sandy beaches and rugged reefs. The colours, sounds and scents which emanate from the carpet of purple moorland heather and grassland dotted with tiny wild flowers have remained unchanged since early Celtic times. Hoëdic is a few miles from Houat, across the Passage des Soeurs. It is smaller and lower than its sister island, but is made of the same granite rock, shaped by fierce storms. This peaceful little island, scattered with thousands of colourful flowers is a perfect place for some memorable walks.
