Light emerging from darkness has always fascinated human beings.
It was from the 17th century onwards that the nature of light was revealed, and progress was made in mastering it, culminating in the recent advent of "photonics". This talk retraces some of the key stages in our understanding of light and presents, in a simple and illustrated way, the foundations of photonics and the way in which this "art of mastering light" impacts on our daily lives.
A professor at the University of Toulouse and a researcher in photonics at LAAS-CNRS, Philippe Arguel has been involved for many years in the dissemination and popularisation of scientific culture.
