FORMER ABBEY & MUSEUM: Situated on the Crozon Peninsula, amidst a stunning coastal landscape, the abbey’s ruins bear witness to its illustrious history. Founded in the 5th century by St Guénolé and rebuilt several times, it was destroyed during the French Revolution before being revived in the 1950s, close to its original site. The museum traces 1,500 years of Breton history and 25 years of archaeological excavations. The ruins and the medicinal herb garden stand within a remarkable coastal setting. Exhibitions, guided tours, children’s activities, concerts… GARDEN: The medicinal herb garden at the Former Abbey has been restored based on archaeological finds that unearthed seeds and pits, some of which date back to the 8th century! The former abbey thus offers a relatively comprehensive overview of the plants used in cooking and medicine during the Early Middle Ages: these are the very same plants that are now being rediscovered in both haute cuisine and health-conscious cooking. EXHIBITION 2026–2027 Towers at the abbey?! In the 13th century, Landévennec Abbey was transformed into a veritable fortified castle. Towers, moats and drawbridges came to surround the church and the monastic buildings: a spectacular change for this place of worship. The exhibition invites visitors to explore this astonishing transformation, shaped by power struggles, ambition, wealth and the need for protection. Archaeological artefacts, games and interactive displays punctuate the tour, whilst a digital 3D reconstruction allows visitors to visualise the abbey as it stood in the Middle Ages. Young and old alike are invited to step back in time, to understand the monks’ daily lives and to discover the secrets of an abbey at the heart of Breton history.
